Why You Should Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Stepping out of your comfort zone seems like a horrible idea. And it is, in some cases. For instance, it may mean being pressured to jump off a moving train like the people in the movie, Divergent because doing that would supposedly prove your courage. That’s sort of just peer pressure. You shouldn’t have to do anything that makes you anxious to the point of it being unhealthy. However, that’s not the kind of stepping-out-of-your-comfort-zone we are concerned with here.

 

We are concerned with the type of stepping-out-of-your-comfort-zone that challenges your capabilities and helps you develop and grow as a person. This helps you get to what’s appropriately called your growth zone. The growth zone is where the magic happens, and the comfort zone is where you stay stagnant. The magic that happens is this inner power you gain, not sprouting actual wings or anything like that (although one might argue that they are theoretical wings).

 

For Sense of Adventure

Life is one big adventure. If you stay in the confines of your little comfortable circle, then what you know about life will be restricted to only that. Imagine life as an infinite circle, and your little life force as a small circle within that. Those who expand their circle to cover as much as they can, experience more; live more. Stepping out of your comfort zone allows you to do just that. A sense of adventure is essential for those who want to get the most out of life.

 

To Develop an Open Mind

How do you know if you wouldn’t be comfortable with something if you haven’t tried? Stepping out of your comfort zone the first few times may be hard, but once you get used to just going for it, you’ll be a lot more open to try new things, and more importantly to keep an open mind when faced with new experiences.

 

To Gain Self-Awareness (Or Self-Discovery)

There may be things about yourself that you never knew, and the only reason is because you decided not to step out of your comfort zone. For example (on a shallow level), not eating a subjectively unappetizing piece of food. A person might think that it’s icky, but little do they know that it would have been their favourite food ever. This also links to the idea of being open-minded, you will never know what you’re missing if you don’t try the things that are uncomfortable or scary to you.

 

To Learn New Things About Yourself

Who could have guessed that you had those dance moves in you? Wow!

Who could have guessed that Calculus would be your strongest subject? Wow!

Who could have guessed that you had a passion for painting? Wow!
You get the idea.

 

To Learn to be Courageous

The habit of stepping out of your comfort zone not only helps you develop an open mind, but it also develops your inner strength. The fact that you would take a risk, or do something that scares you helps you become courageous. It helps you take life by the horns and live it to the fullest, not being limited by anyone or anything.

 

To Inspire and Empower Others

Imagine a little kid asking you for advice on how they should approach a situation that scares them, or even a close friend of yours. Even without words, you could show them through leading by example, by stepping out of your comfort zone, and coming out victorious.

 

Think about something you’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t because you were too scared. Now, go do it (because look at all these neat things you’ll gain from doing it!).
